What it's for: building stop-motion sets fast. Craft-store glue guns are 10 to 20 watts. They run out of heat on big joints, and then you wait while they catch up. Set builders use a professional 100-watt gun because it keeps pumping hot glue, so you can tack plywood walls, foam-board buildings, and base plates together in seconds.

Studio tips

• Hot glue for the set, not the puppet. It's perfect for walls, props, and the scenery that must never move. Keep it off anything you animate, because it lets go under stress.
• Want it removable later? Put a strip of painter's tape down first and glue onto the tape. It peels off clean when you strike the set.
• Clean up glue strings with a hair dryer. A few seconds of warm air and the "spider webs" melt away before they show up on camera.

High temperature, so glue and nozzle get hot enough to burn. Not for children.
